Position Summary
The Corporation of the County of Huron’s Public Works department is seeking a full-time Seasonal Winter Patroller.
Monitors condition of roads in accordance with standards, monitors weather conditions and forecasts, directs response by contracted services, coordinates winter operations, and ensures that all required logs and records are produced and maintained. May additionally perform duties of a Plow Operator, if qualified, as-needed. The term of the contract will be for the winter season; approximately from November 15, 2026, to April 2027.
Role and Responsibilities
- Monitor road and weather conditions and accurately interpret detailed road weather forecasts.
- Responsible for calling out plow operators to maintain roads based on observed conditions and/or weather forecast.
- Log all actions directed and taken by crews and contractors on the roadway.
- Respond and document calls from the public, OPP, and other County and municipal staff regarding road conditions and issues.
- Good communication skills.
- Collaborate with full-time experienced plow operators to determine the best options for current and expected conditions using observations, forecasts, and experience.
- Open and close roads as directed by OPP.
- Monitor and record condition of signs and other road hazards and report them to lead hand or supervisor to coordinate resolution.
- Drive and inspect representative winter routes to determine conditions and maintain detailed logs and apply anti-icing materials to the road when appropriate.
- Perform MMS road inspection of all roads in the patrol area to identify defects and hazards, record and present them to lead hand or supervisor.
- Remove road hazards such as trees, debris, and dead animals from the roadway.
- Snow removal and maintenance around the yard.
- Must have clear and accurate record keeping abilities.
- Participate in the plow operator training program if not already qualified.
- Backup plow operator when required once qualified.
- Perform other shop, equipment, yard, and road maintenance duties as defined by Road Maintenance 2 position.
Qualifications and Education
- Class DZ driver license within 2 years of full-time employment.
- Driver abstract containing no significant record of violations.
- Qualified to operate a chainsaw.
- A certified Huron County plow operator within the first year of employment by participating in the training program.
Preferred Skills
- Qualified plow operator.
- Valid and current Class DZ driver license for part-time staff.
Competitive Compensation
$31.92 per hour, as per the 2026 pay grid.
