Employment Opportunity Winter Patrol Operator

Located within the rolling hills of Northumberland County and bordered by Lake Ontario in the South and Rice Lake in the North, the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand is currently looking to fill the following vacancy: Winter Patrol Operator – Seasonal Part-Time Position.

Reporting directly to the Public Works Lead Hand, and the Public Works Manager, this role is responsible for monitoring and assessing road and weather conditions in support of the Township's winter maintenance program, performing snow and ice control operations, and assisting with the maintenance of municipal roads, sidewalks, parking lots, and other municipal facilities to help ensure safe travel for the public.

The incumbent is also responsible for maintaining accurate records of road conditions, patrol activities and operations responses. This position is employed full-time for the duration of the contract and is required to work patrol hours.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Carry out tasks and duties that are part of the winter municipal roads programs, including snow-plowing, sanding, and other requirements of the public road maintenance program.
• Comply with the standards set out in the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1990 and the health and safety policies implemented by the municipality as they pertain to Public Works employees.
• Report all deficiencies and hazards in respect to municipal equipment and conditions to the Public Works Lead Hand.
• Perform duties in an efficient, effective manner with courteous and respectful communication with the public and township staff.
• Maintain accurate records of road conditions.
• Other duties as prescribed by the Public Works Lead Hand and Manager of Public Works.
• Monitor weather and road conditions and initiate call-in procedures for winter operations as conditions require.
• Be available and on standby during winter events and perform tasks as directed by the Manager of Public Works or Public Works Lead Hand.
• Patrol municipal roads and identify hazards, deficiencies, and areas requiring attention.
• Investigate public complaints and concerns related to road conditions and report findings to the Public Works Lead Hand or Manager of Public Works.

Qualifications & Skills

• Minimum Grade 12 Diploma; preference for technical studies or equivalent industry courses in heavy equipment operations.
• One (1) to three (3) years’ experience in public works environment, road construction, winter control operations, and related heavy equipment operation including backhoe, grader, loader, snow and ice removal equipment.
• Minimum class “D” driver’s license, Z endorsement.
• Certification in First Aid/CPR and WHMIS.
• Minimum Maintenance Standards for Municipal Highways Regulation 239/02.
• Valid and satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Driver’s Abstract required prior to employment.

Hours of Work

This is a Part-Time Seasonal position. The contract will start the week of November 1, 2026 and run to the week of May 1, 2027.

Compensation

The pay rate for this position is $31.45 - $34.02 per hour plus $2.00/hour premium (January 1, 2026 Wage rate CUPE 5574).
