About The Municipality Of West Grey

Job Overview

Reporting to the Rural Lead Hand and/or the Manager of Public Works and Engineering, the Winter Operator Labourer is responsible for assisting West Grey with winter maintenance activities on roads using a snowplow truck or grader during the months of November to March as a minimum in any of our Public Works Depots (Bentinck, Durham, Glenelg, Normanby).

Job Details

• Operates winter maintenance equipment including plowing and sanding of municipal roads in a safe and timely manner.
• Operates a road grader along with a variety of other equipment in a safe and timely manner.
• Clears snow from stop sign locations, catch basins and ditches.
• Supply, place, and compact cold mix asphalt as needed for pothole repairs.
• Responsible for maintenance and servicing of equipment, vehicles and tools in a proper, safe and efficient manner including performing circle checks on all equipment operated on a daily basis.
• Must keep a daily logbook of all activities.
• Performs all other duties as assigned by the Rural Lead Hand and/or the Manager of Public Works and Engineering.

Knowledge, Training and Qualifications

• Minimum Grade 12 education.
• Must have a Class D driver’s license with “Z” endorsement.
• Three to five years experience operating and maintaining highway snowplows and graders is considered an asset.
• Experience in the operation of snow plowing equipment and loader considered an asset.
• Sound knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and proper personal protective equipment.
• A criminal check and clean driver’s abstract are required.
• Must be willing to take training courses as required.
• Must be willing to work overtime as required, including evenings and weekends, and as dictated by emergencies and adverse weather.

Working Conditions

This position is based outdoors in all weather conditions. Work is primarily Monday to Friday, however overtime on evenings and weekends is expected. Working in a variety of conditions such as next to road traffic and in trenches.

The Winter Operator Labourer could occasionally be exposed to fumes, odours, noise, toxic gases and poisonous plants. This role requires interaction with the public and the incumbent should be prepared to deal with occasional stressful encounters at any time.
