Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Participate in the operations, repair and maintenance of the Water Treatment and distribution systems, Wastewater Treatment and collection and all associated infrastructure under the jurisdiction of the Town.
• Discuss plans, priorities and schedules with the Manager of Wastewater Systems/Manager of Water Systems, or designate, including the most appropriate equipment and materials to be used for all jobs; plans and schedules are developed/changed in a team effort, with the Manager maintaining accountability.
• Carry out work assignments using a variety of vehicles, light equipment, hand and power tools such as trucks, ground maintenance equipment - pumps, generators, snowblowers, meters, metering devices, controllers, valves.
• Respond to emergencies as required and participate in the on-call rotation.
• Conduct regular inspections of water and wastewater systems to ensure the systems are operating at the desired level of quality.
• Repair, maintain and install watermains, fire hydrants, water service lines, valves, pump stations, sanitary sewer main, sanitary service lines and sanitary force main and treatment plant equipment and all associated components.
• Complete daily inspection reports and records relative to equipment used and undertake minor repairs and maintenance of assigned equipment.
• Order miscellaneous supplies and major repair parts in consultation with the Manager of Wastewater Systems/Manager of Water Systems and/or designate.
• Ensure a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and technical operation is maintained to ensure regulatory compliance.
• Ensure that occupational health and safety practices are strictly observed, and all regulatory requirements are adhered to.
• Responsible for risk management in assigned areas; conduct inspections and patrols, initiate or implement controls, repairs and/or elimination of risks or hazards, maintain concise records and ensure concerns and risks are communicated to the relevant manager.
• Analyze information to interpret trends of results with a high degree of accuracy and concentration.
• Use independent judgment, initiative, creativity and original research complementary to operations as needed.
• Perform other related duties within the general parameters of this job description as reasonably requested by the Manager of Wastewater Systems/Manager of Water Systems and/or designate.

Working Conditions

• Exposure to physical hazards and related stress, including inclement weather, noise.
• Position involves moderate physical exertion such as climbing, occasional lifting, standing, bending, extensive walking over rough terrain or working from ladders or in confined spaces for limited periods of time.
• Work environment contains high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations, requiring planned safety precautions.
• Risk of injury, accidents, or work-related illness is low but risk of serious injury considerable if safety procedures are not followed.
• Working in confined spaces.
• Working with hazardous chemicals for various treatment stages.
• Working in noisy areas with extreme temperatures.
• Utilizing high voltage three phase electrical and electrical generation equipment.
• Subject to inclement weather and exposure to sewage during operation, maintenance and construction activities.
• Unusual and unscheduled hours; on-call and overtime work required.

Knowledge and Skill

• Possess appropriate regulatory Operator Licenses for wastewater treatment and wastewater collection, and regulatory Operator Certificates for water treatment and water distribution applicable to the Corporation's facility classifications.
• Possess or successfully complete training in topics related to water or wastewater such as treatment and collection of wastewater, treatment and distribution of water, working at heights, construction inspection of sewer and water systems, and preventative maintenance.
• Possess Class “G” driver’s license in good standing.
• Standard First Aid and CPR, AED certification.
• Confined space entry certification.
• Mechanical skills to operate and maintain equipment such as trucks, grounds maintenance equipment, pumps, compressors, generators, snowblowers, small power equipment safely and effectively.
• Operational familiarity and knowledge of applicable legislation.
• Ability to work effectively with technology including digital data collection and record keeping.
• Meets competent person criteria of OHSA.
• Physical ability to fulfill the job requirements.
• Willingness to complete course upgrading, certification and annual training requirements as needed to comply with legislative requirements.
