Position Summary

Working as part of a team, under the direction of the Fire Services division, providing first response, fire suppression, rescue and specialized operations as required.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Participate in regularly scheduled training sessions and maintain a minimum of 75% attendance rate.
• Maintain a minimum attendance rate of 33% to emergency incidents.
• Travel time from your residence shall not exceed 5 minutes to reach the fire hall, unless approved otherwise by Fire Chief and Deputy Chief.
• Perform fire ground operations to protect lives, minimize property loss, and reduce environmental damage including hazard recognition, securing water supplies, advancing hose lines, operating portable pumps, search and rescue, ladder operations, ventilation, extinguishing fires, salvage, and overhaul activities.
• Perform rescue operations including vehicle extrication, structural collapse area securing, industrial rescue, and land-based water rescue.
• Provide emergency patient care and respond as a first responder during incidents.
• Follow Firefighter safety practices in compliance with legislation, standards, and department guidelines.
• Operate fire apparatus according to regulations and department standards.
• Maintain equipment in accordance with Standard Operating Guidelines.
• Assist with fire prevention and public education programs as directed.
• Maintain physical strength and agility to perform demanding physical tasks and operate firefighting equipment under adverse conditions.

Qualifications

• Agility and strength to perform prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions as determined by job-specific physical appraisal.
• High School Diploma or approved equivalent.
• The following certifications are considered assets and proof will be required:
  • NFPA 1001 Level 1 and 2 certification
  • NFPA 1002 certification
  • NFPA 1030 or 1031
  • NFPA 1041
  • NFPA 472/1072
  • NFPA 1521
  • NFPA 1035
  • Valid First Responder certification or equivalent, with HCP CPR C and AED certification or equivalent
  • NFPA 1006 certification
• A medical exam and report is required prior to candidate start date at candidate’s expense.
• Unrestricted DZ License with no more than 3 demerit points.
• No criminal convictions without pardon.
• Ability to make decisions and react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
• Effective English communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Good mechanical aptitude and record keeping skills.
• Ability to work within a highly structured workplace and follow regulations and procedures.
• Possess qualities necessary for team tasks and cultural sensitivity.
• Basic computer skills and ability to use device for online training and email communications.
• Ability to wear respiratory protection and approved uniforms as required.

Hours of Work

Available to respond as a volunteer Firefighter to emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (must attend minimum 33% of emergency responses). Weekly training sessions Monday evenings 19:00 lasting approximately 2 hours. On call weekends and holidays approximately 1 in 4.
