Position Summary

Reporting to the Supervisor, Facilities & Transit, the Transit Driver will be responsible for safely operating transit vehicles in accordance with applicable legislation, including during adverse road and weather conditions, on a designated route and schedule. This role is responsible for collecting fares, issuing transfers, and ensuring the validity of transfers and passes. The Transit Driver will perform daily inspections, monitor vehicle performance, and report any irregularities to Operations.

Duties & Responsibilities

Transit Operations

  • Safely operate transit vehicles on time and in a proper manner, including during adverse conditions, on a designated route and schedule.
  • Abide by Highway Traffic Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act, Manual of Operations, other legislation, Town policies and procedures.
  • Collect fares and issue transfers, ensuring validity of transfers and passes.
  • Report and document all incidents, accidents and injuries immediately.
  • Assist Operations by reporting relevant information and problems impacting transit services such as route blockages, accident locations, traffic congestion, weather and road conditions.
  • Perform daily vehicle inspections.
  • Regulate heating, lighting, ventilation; operate doors and gates etc.
  • Monitor vehicle performance and report any irregularities to Operations.

  • Work as a team player promoting a positive and professional work environment with integrity and respect.
  • Act as an Ambassador throughout the community, positively representing the Town.
  • Abide by the policies and procedures of the Town.
  • Follow Occupational Health and Safety Act and report incidents immediately to direct supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet overall goals and objectives of the Town.
  • Operate within the culture and core values of the organization.
  • Maintain knowledge and expertise in relevant fields.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Valid Ontario class B/C or F driver’s license with Z endorsement.
  • Two to three years of commercial driving experience required; previous transit bus driving experience is an asset.
  • Recent experience working with the public involving customer service, interpersonal communication, problem-solving, and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts including weekends, statutory holidays, and split shifts in all weather conditions.
  • Strong communication and comprehension skills, including the ability to complete forms.
  • Efficient problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism in difficult situations.
  • High punctuality and attendance to support transit operations.

  • Sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Reaching, gripping, and pushing/pulling.
  • Twisting and turning neck.
  • Sensory and perceptual demands.
  • Regular exposure to fumes, odours, and moderate noise.
  • Visual attention for health and safety compliance and personal safety on the job.

Working Conditions

  • Work in all weather conditions (heat/cold).
  • May be required to work a variety of shifts including early mornings, late evenings, holidays, and split shifts.
  • Will be required to work on an on-call basis.
