Position Description

Purpose: During the winter months, under the supervision of the Public Works Foreman & Fleet Manager and Public Works Lead Hands, the patrol person carries out an early morning patrol to determine the necessary equipment required to meet the minimum maintenance standards and winter control operations on off hours shift.

This person will patrol two (2) days in Dundalk, two (2) days in Holstein and is on call for sidewalk maintenance in Dundalk.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform early morning patrols starting at 2:00am from Dundalk and Holstein depots on a rotating weekly and weekend schedule.
• Dundalk sidewalk winter control.
• Winter control including plowing, spreading sand and salt, snow removal, snow fence erection and removal, winter damage repairs.
• Roadside maintenance such as cold mix patching, sweeping, washout repairs, tree trimming.
• Loose top maintenance.
• Operate equipment including trucks, sanders, 10' plow, tractors/mowers, wood chipper, wheel loader, chainsaw.
• Install and maintain safety devices: signs, guide posts, repairs.
• Maintain all equipment including minor fabrications required for daily operations.
• Perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
• Represent the Municipality through public contact during duties.

Skills and Qualifications

• High School Diploma required.
• Full G licence required; DZ or AZ driver’s licence an asset.
• Required On-The-Job Training: Workplace Health and Safety, WHMIS, CPR, First Aid.
• Preferred experience: heavy equipment operation, health and safety training, chainsaw course (assets).
• Strong communication skills and team player.
• Mechanical aptitude and good work ethic.
• Ability to drive safely in winter conditions.

Working Conditions

• Considerable time outdoors and in garage environment.
• Exposure to sitting, standing, noise, adverse temperature, pushing/pulling, lifting/carrying, dust, odors.
• Work occasionally with wide variety of physical and environmental demands typical for winter patrol and roadside maintenance.

The position requires regular early morning shifts and on-call availability for maintenance during the winter season November 15 to March 31 on a rotating schedule.

Additional Information

No direct supervision responsibilities or financial responsibilities.

Health and safety practices must be followed at all times to ensure safe roads and safe operation of equipment during winter conditions.
