Description
The Township of Springwater, located in Simcoe County, Ontario, is seeking highly motivated and experienced individuals to fill the role of Substitute Crossing Guard for backup coverage. Substitute Crossing Guards will be on-call and required to report to various designated crossing locations on short notice.
Position Responsibilities
- Safely direct or escort pedestrians, as defined in the Highway Traffic Act, across roadways at designated school crossings by monitoring traffic flow gaps and assuming right of way.
- Be punctual, arrive on time, and remain at the school crossing location for the scheduled hours.
- Deal with all contacts in a courteous, friendly and efficient manner.
- Respond to pedestrian inquiries and provide information as required.
- Spread salt/sand mixture around sidewalk and crosswalk areas during winter months to melt ice and improve traction.
- Observe and report any safety-related incidents or hazardous conditions.
- Recognize road hazards and exercise good judgement when interrupting the flow of traffic.
- Adhere to emergency vehicle right of way, ensuring priority over vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
- Wear mandatory safety equipment and clothing supplied by the Township at all times while on duty.
- Attend advanced health and safety training.
- Work in compliance with the Highway Traffic Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS, applicable legislation, regulations, policies, procedures, and operational guidelines.
- Ensure all necessary personal protective equipment (e.g. safety boots, reflective vest, gloves, hearing protection, eye protection, stop sign) are used and maintained in good condition.
Qualifications and Experience
- Excellent judgment, initiative, and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with children, parents, pedestrians, school officials and police.
- Ability to walk quickly and repeatedly in and out of the intersection and stand for 60 minutes, three times a day.
- Physical ability to perform crossing activities.
- Effective hearing and vision to detect on-coming traffic at a safe distance (approximately 300 feet).
- Ability to read, interpret and follow procedural and policy manuals related to the job.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Willingness to work outside in all weather conditions.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Must obtain an acceptable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check at the candidate’s expense before employment start date.
- Standard First Aid level C, CPR, and AED training is considered an asset.
- Must be available to work on short notice and willing to work a flexible schedule.
Hours of Work
This position will be on standby and may be called to work up to 10 hours per week with shifts scheduled at two different times a day, Monday to Friday, during the school calendar year. Shifts depend on the school schedule and flexibility is required for on-call work, shift changes, location changes, and extra hours as needed.
