Reports to the School Crossing Supervisor and is responsible for ensuring that all pedestrians, namely elementary school children are crossed safely at designated crossing locations.

General Duties

  • Must obey all established traffic safety regulations to ensure that all pedestrians, namely elementary school children going to and coming from school are assisted in crossing major and busy roadways at desired locations.
  • Report and document any problems, i.e. weather conditions, children, and motorists to supervisor.
  • May assist in training new guards, as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, which are directly related to the responsibilities of the position.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience related to duties listed above.
  • Working knowledge of traffic safety regulations.
  • Must have the ability to maintain a high degree of concentration, with visual and hearing ability to recognize traffic at a safe distance.
  • Exposed to traffic noise and exhaust fumes.
  • Must have the ability to perform the physical aspects of this position including standing and walking for prolonged periods of time and carrying a hand-held stop sign (5 lbs).
  • Must be able to perform the above-noted employment activities outside in all weather conditions, including extremes of heat and cold.

Hours

1.65 - 2.75 hours daily

Additional Notes

  • The individual will be required to travel to various work locations within the City of Hamilton.
  • As a condition of employment, the successful applicant(s) will be required to obtain a Criminal Reference Check (Vulnerable Sector Screening), at their own expense, prior to beginning work in this position.
  • As a condition of employment, the successful applicant(s) will be required to obtain a Medical Clearance, Vision and Hearing test, at their own expense, prior to beginning work in this position.
