Core Duties and Responsibilities
- Plans, develops, implements and organizes core lesson plans for instructor use and recreation programs and events, including research for potential new programs and partnerships.
- Compiles program information for marketing and promotional materials and ensures all program information is up-to-date and accurate in the recreation management software system.
- Liaises with and develops partnerships with community organizations in the delivery of community recreation programs and services.
- Ensures programs are delivered within legislative requirements and guidelines considering risk management, human resources, health and safety, and budget targets.
- Maintains inventories of recreation supplies and equipment, ordering and restocking as needed.
- Oversees day-to-day operations of programs, ensures programs run according to plan and instructs programs where required.
- Provides customer service support for general inquiries, registrations, bookings and program schedules related to recreation and other community programs; resolves problems and conflicts using appropriate behaviour management techniques.
- Supervises and directs part-time recreation staff and volunteers; assists with recruitment, onboarding, training, administration and performance reviews.
- Implements and adjusts staff and program schedules to optimize efficiencies and meet program requirements.
- Inputs preliminary payroll and accounts receivable/payable functions for approval by Supervisor or Manager.
- Assists with development of policies, procedures, and standard operating procedures.
- Ensures training and work practices comply with Town policies and applicable legislation to ensure public and staff safety.
- Completes facility bookings for assigned role and assists with facility set-up to ensure a safe, accessible environment prepared for programming.
- Inspects and monitors program equipment and facilities to support risk management, accessibility and patron satisfaction.
- Assists with development and implementation of promotional content for leisure guide, website and social media.
- Assists with sponsorship program implementation and maintenance of sponsors for programs, events and facilities.
- Conducts and assists with ongoing evaluations of programs.
- Prepares reports related to registrations and staffing and assists with budget development and meeting budget targets.
- Provides backup to department staff as required, undertakes special projects, and performs other related duties.
Qualifications Required
- Post-secondary diploma in recreation, leisure studies or relevant field with minimum two years relevant experience in recreation programming.
- Standard First Aid and CPR C Certification, HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development, Healthy Aging and HIGH FIVE Quest 2 certification required or willingness to obtain.
- Relevant health, wellness and fitness related program certifications such as personal training, fitness instruction, nutrition, or other wellness certifications.
- Other recreation program certifications considered an asset (e.g. Lifesaving Society Instructor Trainer, First Aid Instructor, National Lifeguard Instructor & Examiner, HIGH FIVE Trainer certifications, Association of Challenge Course Technology Course Manager, Certified Pool Operator, Waterslide Mechanic, Crisis Intervention Training).
- Good working knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and WHMIS 2015.
- Demonstrated interpersonal and customer service skills, ability to work independently or as part of a team, and to maintain confidentiality.
- Strong written and verbal communication, administrative, organizational, analytical, problem solving, research and time management skills with attention to detail.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, recreation management software, and social media platforms. Experience with web technology and design software considered an asset.
- Ability to provide a current and acceptable vulnerable sector police record check.
- Valid Class “G” Ontario Driver’s license in good standing with current acceptable Driver’s Abstract and reliable vehicle for corporate business use.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
Requires computer usage, driving, walking, standing for long periods, and periodic lifting up to 50 lbs. Works under tight timelines with competing priorities.
