Employment Opportunity

The Corporation of the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand is currently looking to fill the following vacancy: Public Works Operator – Part-Time Seasonal Contract (Min. 20 hours/week).

Reporting directly to the Public Works Lead Hand, and the Public Works Manager, this role is responsible for the daily operations of roads maintenance while using heavy trucks, dumps/plows and/or loaders. This position requires the candidate to be flexible and available for support to the department during winter months.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Responsible for carrying out tasks and duties that are a part of the winter municipal roads programs. These include snow-plowing, sanding, and other requirements of the public road maintenance program.
• Comply with the standards set out in the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1990 and the health and safety policies implemented by the municipality, as they pertain to Public Works employees.
• Report all deficiencies and hazards in respect to the municipal equipment and conditions to the Public Works Lead Hand.
• Responsible for performing duties in an efficient, effective manner, and must behave in a courteous and respectful way in communication with members of the general public and other township staff.
• Other duties as prescribed by the Public Works Lead Hand or Manager of Public Works.

Qualifications & Skills

• Successful completion of Grade 12 or the equivalent.
• Minimum of one (1) year experience in construction, road maintenance, or utility setting, farm equipment, dump truck or equivalent heavy equipment.
• DZ license with a clean driver’s abstract.
• Evening & weekend work will be required.
• Experience operating a tandem plow truck with wing and sander considered an asset.
• Employee to provide own CSA approved safety footwear.
• Obtain and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check.

The successful candidate will be required to submit a satisfactory Criminal Record Check & Driver’s Abstract prior to the commencement of employment.

Hours of Work

This is a casual call in position. This contract will start the week of Oct 5, 2026 and run to the week of April 24, 2027.

Compensation

The pay rate for this position is $31.45 (January 1, 2026 Wage rate CUPE 5574).
