The Portfolio

Reporting to the Recreation Supervisor, Programs and Services, the Recreation Program Leader is responsible for leading a group of children through an organized recreational program that is consistent with the objectives, practices and procedures of the Town of Grimsby.

The Candidate

As a candidate for this position, you are currently enrolled in secondary or post-secondary education and hold a valid Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification. You have completed, or are willing to complete, Principles of Healthy Child Development (PHCD) and HIGH FIVE training, along with one (1) year of recent experience leading recreation programs, activities, or classes. You are an enthusiastic and energetic individual with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to create engaging, inclusive experiences that encourage active participation.

Working for the Town of Grimsby

This is a seasonal part-time position working up to 24 hours per week, including weekday and evenings. The Town of Grimsby offers candidates for this position a wage of $18.29 per hour. Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants through constant supervision during all program hours, including all transition areas, offsite excursions and during any transportation that is part of the program.
  • Prepare and conduct activities using principles of healthy child development.
  • Guide Leaders-In-Training to develop leadership skills by offering guidance, feedback and the opportunity to lead activities.
  • Work collaboratively towards the decisions and goals of staff team and the Town of Grimsby.
  • Participate actively in staff training and be familiar with staff manual content.
  • Maintain a safe work environment at all times and report concerns or foreseeable accidents.
  • Conduct yourself professionally as a Town of Grimsby staff member.
  • Create a fun, safe, interesting, and participant-centered program environment.
  • Engage actively with your group through participation and motivation.
  • Deliver clear, age-appropriate and accurate instructions for all program activities.
  • Demonstrate and encourage important play practices such as equality, fairness, co-operation, skill development and teamwork.
  • Be professional, helpful, and positive with parents, participants and members of the public.
  • Prepare for possible program adaptations for inclusion of special needs participants.
  • Learn each child’s name by the end of the second day.
  • Support daily operations such as site checks, attendance taking, set up, and clean up.
  • Be aware of the daily program plan and any special roles required.
  • Complete required paperwork on time and professionally.
  • Maintain continual communication with Program Supervisor and address concerns related to the program or your capacity immediately.
  • Be familiar with allergies, special needs or other concerns regarding a group.
