General Duties
- Performs fire ground operations under the direction of a Supervisor, including searching for, rescuing and evacuating individuals, protecting exposures, confining, controlling and extinguishing fires to protect lives, salvaging and overhauling structures and contents to minimize property loss, all pursuant to department policies, procedures, and Health and Safety legislation.
- Performs rescue operations involving primary and secondary search, stabilizing the scene and patient’s injuries, providing egress for patient safety, applying first aid and preparing patients for transport to medical facilities.
- Responds promptly to emergency and non-emergency calls such as medical symptom assists, defibrillation, motor vehicle collisions, carbon monoxide alarms, lift assists, false alarms, natural gas leaks, and technical rescues.
- Controls hazardous materials to prevent injury or loss of life and to minimize property and environmental damage by elimination, isolation, or reduction of hazardous materials.
- Employs defensive driving and operates fire apparatus safely and efficiently under Highway Traffic Act and vehicle parameters.
- Inspects fire apparatus and equipment daily to ensure readiness, extend equipment life, ensure safety and report deficiencies promptly to supervisors.
- Participates in fire safety inspections checking for fire hazards, fire protection and detection systems, and accessibility of fire department connections to maintain community safety standards.
- Performs station duties including answering telephones, greeting visitors, cleaning and maintaining facilities, conducting inventory of supplies, and reporting hazards or deficiencies to supervisors in line with department procedures.
- Delivers public fire prevention education and public relations including presentations, special activities, demonstrations and professional community engagement.
- Operates communications equipment such as mobile/portable radios, computers, phones, tablets ensuring proper message transmission/receipt as per department policy.
- Assists in developing pre-fire plans by surveying structures and properties, preparing sketches, identifying hazardous materials, fire protection systems, utility shutoffs, occupancy details and planning emergency response and fire suppression procedures.
- Participates in specialty training programs to enhance department competency during emergency incidents.
- Performs various administrative duties ensuring completion and maintenance of records, forms and compliance with relevant legislation for efficient organizational operation.
- Works in accordance with applicable Health and Safety legislation, and City of Hamilton corporate and departmental policies concerning Occupational Health and Safety.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Grade 12 or approved equivalent.
- Ability to work within a highly structured environment, following all rules, regulations, chain of command, policies and procedures of the Hamilton Fire Department.
- Capable of learning and performing various fire extinguishing and rescue techniques.
- Ability to conduct routine inspection and cleaning of apparatus and equipment.
- Good communication skills in English, both oral and written.
- Ability to make decisions and react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
- Must possess and maintain physical strength, stamina and agility to perform arduous work and competently operate all firefighting and rescue apparatus.
