Parks, Recreation & Facilities Labourer – Seasonal Contract Position

Located within the rolling hills of Northumberland County and bordered by Lake Ontario in the South and Rice Lake in the North, the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand is currently looking to fill the following vacancy:

Reporting to the Parks, Recreation Facilities Manager, the Parks, Recreation & Facilities Labourer is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of day-to-day operation of all parks, trails and Municipal facilities. This position requires good customer service and communication while overseeing seasonal staff and working around the township.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Responsible for the safe operation of all arena and grounds keeping equipment including ice resurfacers, floor cleaners, lawn tractors and mowers, weed eaters, snow blowers, Township trucks.
• Responsible for taking regular and scheduled refrigeration equipment readings and logging them accordingly.
• Operate equipment including, but not limited to, ice making, ice maintenance, janitorial, and building maintenance.
• Ensure ice-making equipment is maintained in accordance with technical specifications and preventative maintenance procedures.
• Perform duties including but not limited to assisting in the installation and removal of ice, flooding, ice painting, shaving, edging and building.
• Coordinate dressing rooms for user groups and ensure the cleanliness of each dressing room by mopping, removing waste and debris, etc.
• Respond and proactively address customer service issues in a courteous and efficient manner.
• Identify hazards and take corrective measures. Inform the Parks and Recreation Lead Hand of potentially dangerous situations, unmaintained areas, incidents or occurrences affecting safety.
• Perform opening and closing duties, ensuring alarms are set and all required doors are locked.
• Perform set-up and tear down for special events in Township facilities, including arenas and recreation centres.
• Ensure exterior facility sidewalks, walkways, parking lots and emergency exits are clean, clear and free of hazards such as ice, snow, and debris.

Qualifications & Skills

• Completion of Grade 12 education (OSSD or equivalent).
• Minimum valid Class G driver’s license with a clean driving record.
• Knowledge of provincial legislation pertaining to the operation of facilities, including but not limited to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and the Technical Safety Standards Association (TSSA).
• Current CPR, First Aid, and AED training.
• Minimum one (1) year Parks and Recreation experience, preferably in a municipal setting.
• Experience operating an ice re-surfacer considered an asset.
• Certified Grounds Technician designation considered an asset.
• Horticultural, arborist, sports field, irrigation, landscaping & municipal experience are all assets.
• Available to work some evenings and weekends as required.
• Employee to provide own CSA approved safety footwear.
• Obtain and maintain a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check.

The successful candidate will be required to submit a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check & Driver’s Abstract prior to the commencement of employment.

Hours of Work

This is a seasonal contract position which includes evenings and weekends. This contract will start the week of October 5, 2026 and ends May 1, 2027.

Compensation

The pay rate for this position is $21.15 (January 1, 2026 Wage rate CUPE 5574).
