Purpose and Scope
The Parks Operator is responsible for completing tasks regarding the maintenance for all City parks, sports fields, open space areas, facilities and for the maintenance of parks vehicles and all park and facility related equipment.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform winter maintenance duties including snow clearing, sanding and salting of facilities, sidewalks, trails, parking lots.
- Perform general maintenance, repair and inspection of equipment in Parks and Open Spaces, including turf and grounds maintenance of sports fields, parkland (fertilizing, seeding, lining, field setup), trails, facility maintenance, trees, hedges, gardens, signs, watering and irrigation systems, boat launches and docks.
- Assist in the set up, clean up and maintenance of community special events and maintain grounds for safety of attendees and staff.
- Playground and splash pad maintenance and sanitation.
- Assist the Supervisor and Foreperson in providing occasional guidance and training to crew members (summer students).
- Keep accurate and detailed digital and written records management documentation.
- Operate equipment such as mowers, hand and power tools associated with general carpentry, tractors and attachments, debris removal and tree cutting and pruning equipment.
- Deal courteously and effectively with the public, facility users, staff, suppliers and contract services.
- Perform daily/weekly safety checklist per health and safety regulations and city policies.
- Assist other parks staff with duties assigned by the Parks Foreperson.
- Ensure proper collection and disposal of garbage/recycling following department procedures.
- Assist with contractors including canteen operators, marina operators and others working with the City.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings as required.
- Attend annual performance appraisals and related training and development.
- Respond positively and effectively to all park and facility user inquiries and concerns.
- Complete other duties that may be required from time to time.

- Follow all employee guidelines and occupational health and safety legislation, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Standard Operating Guidelines (SOG).

Education Specialised Training Skills
- Minimum Grade 12 education or equivalent.
- Class G driver’s licence and safe driving record satisfactory to employer.
- Ability to operate equipment such as mower, truck, and trailer.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends.
- Ability to work as a team member within a service delivery department.
- Knowledge of turf/sports field maintenance, special event setup/cleanup, parks maintenance, parks furniture/equipment inspection, and related operations.
Nice to have: Valid Class DZ driver’s licence; ability to communicate in both English and French.
Work Experience
- Minimum one (1) year previous relevant work experience.
- Demonstrated interpersonal and team skills.
- Experience in parks, parks maintenance or construction, horticulture, playground construction and maintenance.
Nice to have: Previous municipal experience, maintenance and repair of municipal infrastructure, working knowledge of equipment.
Decision Making
Minimal responsibility affecting the department.
Supervision
No direct supervisory responsibility.
Work Environment
- Regular evening and weekend work required.
- Variety of shifts including rotation days, weekends and standby.
- Physically able and competent to perform duties under adverse weather conditions.
