Parks Labourer – Winter Operations (Harbours)

Position Details

• Employment Type: Temporary Full Time (CUPE 136T)
• Duration: Up to three contract positions available, lasting approximately two months

• Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, shifts from 7:00am to 3:30pm, including occasional weekends

Job Responsibilities

• Assist with Harbours boat lifting operations.
• Perform litter pick up and facility checks in the parks and open space system maintained by the Town; report any incomplete work or issues to the Lead-hand and/or Supervisor.
• Collect limbs and brush; rake; perform debris and litter pick-up from roadsides, creeks, parks, parking lots, etc.
• Prepare ground by hand digging, raking and laying sod.
• Adhere to assigned schedules of waste pickups and small litter removal.
• Shovel snow and salt walkways as required.
• Act as a flag person on roadways.
• Maintain vehicles and equipment in a clean, tidy condition, making regular inspections and circle checks, reporting defects in a prescribed manner.
• Apply safety precautions and procedures in the performance of duties and operation of motorized equipment ensuring compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ministry of Transportation Temporary Conditions for Road Work, standard operating procedures and policies of the Town of Oakville.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Minimum of Grade 12 education or acceptable equivalent in education and experience.
• Previous related experience in parks maintenance and related equipment.
• Hold and provide a copy of a valid and unrestricted Ontario Driver’s License Class G minimum; DZ considered an asset.
• Driving record demonstrating responsible and safe driving behaviour; applicants with 6 or more points are ineligible.
• New hires required to provide a current drivers abstract (no older than 30 days) and pass a Town administered road test prior to assuming the position.
• Must possess an understanding of the Highway Traffic Act and knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
• Demonstrated mechanical aptitude, effective communication (oral and written), customer service, and problem-solving skills.
• Proficient time management skills and flexibility in adjusting between various duties.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
• Preference given to candidates with minimum 1 year's experience with machines and equipment used including trucks, vans, tractors, loaders, mowing equipment, small hand equipment.
• Willingness to work a 40-hour workweek in varying weather conditions and availability for shift work including rotating and weekend shifts.
