Job Summary

Reporting to the Supervisor, Fleet Services, this position provides scheduled annual inspections, preventative maintenance and repairs to Public Works, Halton Police and Halton Ambulance vehicles.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs scheduled annual inspections, preventative maintenance and repairs to all Public Works, Halton Police and Halton Ambulance vehicles, including off-road equipment and small equipment.
  • Performs aftermarket installations of equipment to new vehicles as required including but not limited to, two-way radios, identification decals, accessory electrical wiring/lighting and winches.
  • Troubleshoots vehicle/equipment issues and performs non-scheduled and emergency repairs on Regional vehicles while performing rotational Mechanic stand-by duties.
  • Ensures complete & accurate documentation is input on vehicle repair work orders, daily time sheets and all other work related documentation.
  • Functions as a member of a dynamic team and demonstrates team co-operation at all times.
  • Complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Halton Region’s safety standards & policies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications

Essential

  • Secondary school diploma along with a minimum of five (5) years’ experience working in fleet maintenance.
  • Must be licensed to work on heavy duty trucks, equipment, and light vehicles demonstrated by having obtained a 310S (Automotive Service Technician) and/or 310T (Truck and Coach) certificates issued by the Skilled Trades Ontario. The Regional Municipality of Halton will consider an applicant with only a 310S or 310T license, with exception that the applicant shall acquire the other license.
  • A valid DZ license and Air Conditioning Certificate (Ontario Ozone Depletion).
  • Strong understanding of on-board vehicle computerized systems, including the ability to operate electronic monitoring and diagnostic equipment.
  • Experience in electrical systems, heavy equipment, backhoes, air and hydraulic systems (pumps/cylinders).
  • Additional competencies include the ability to operate cutting torches, various welding equipment and knowledge of metal fabrication.
  • Must also be able to access maintenance information and technical manuals on internet-based sources such as All-Data or Mitchell on Demand.
  • Computer literacy in a Networked Windows environment (Microsoft 365).
  • Experience with SAP and the Plant Maintenance module.
  • Excellent verbal, written and strong interpersonal skills.

Preferred

  • Diesel Engine experience.
  • EV and Hybrid vehicle experience is an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Working/ Employment Conditions

Working Conditions

  • Drive a Regional vehicle and will be required to provide a copy of their driver’s license and a satisfactory driver’s abstract, by their first day of employment.
  • Must be able to perform all the necessary physical tasks associated with the repair and maintenance of Halton Regional vehicles.

Employment Conditions

  • Valid Ontario G class driver’s license.
  • Current (obtained within the past six (6) months), original and acceptable Criminal Records Check, by the first day of employment.
