Position Summary

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Education & Visitor Engagement, the Events Programmer is responsible for coordinating programs, related marketing, and special events for the Simcoe County Museum. The Events Programmer performs duties in accordance with established procedures and policies of the County of Simcoe and applicable legislation.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate Museum special events and activities including creation of programming, coordination of logistics, overseeing event implementation, and liaising with volunteers and partner groups.
  • Provide information to the media relating to events programming, including writing press releases, communicating with media members, and creating/disbursing advertising for Museum events.
  • Assist with educational programming as required.
  • Represent the Simcoe County Museum and travel to local area events as needed.
  • Attend meetings such as Barrie Arts Council and Friends of the Simcoe County Museum.
  • Conduct programming at local community events.
  • Wear appropriate and approved historical costumes complimentary to specific programs.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and complete requisitions.
  • Utilize and reconcile County purchasing card and create/receive purchase orders using approved systems.
  • Perform special projects and other duties including redeployment in emergency situations.
  • Participate on committees as required.
  • Comply with provincial and County occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

Education, Technical Skills and Certification

  • Two (2) year diploma in Museum Studies (or educational equivalency in accordance with County Policy).
  • Completion of an O.M.A. Certificate program considered an asset.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work well with internal and external contacts.
  • Highly motivated with excellent customer and interpersonal skills; able to work well under pressure.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills; adaptable and flexible in a fast-paced, multi-functional environment.
  • Excellent computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, and database applications in a Windows environment.
  • Ability to act independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
  • Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
  • Valid G class driver’s license and access to reliable vehicle; some travel required using personal vehicle.
  • Must be available to work statutory holidays, evenings and weekends as required.

Experience

  • Two (2) years related experience.
  • Supervisory experience considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of Museum operations including educational, cultural and community elements.
  • Experience working with the public.

Effort

  • Visual and mental effort required when creating advertising material, taking minutes, etc.
  • Physical effort required when assisting with moving exhibits, hanging pictures, etc.

Working Conditions

  • Numerous interruptions in a busy environment.
  • Possible exposure to dust, fumes and/or gases related to the restoration process from time to time.
  • Exposure to inclement weather, dust, dirt, open flame, smoke, fumes and/or gases related to museum programming.
