Reporting to the Roads Supervisor, Public Works, the Equipment Operator is responsible for operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment used to maintain the transportation infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate vehicles and equipment including backhoe, loader, gradall, motor grader, dump truck (with snowplows and sanders), pickup trucks, tractor lawnmower, chainsaws, weed eaters, street sweepers, and other tools as required.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repairs on Public Works trucks and equipment.
  • Erect advisory and regulatory signs within the Municipal Right of Way in compliance with the Highway Traffic Act, municipal by-laws, and best practices.
  • Perform general maintenance including carpentry, masonry, and general labour.
  • Patrol roads and monitor, report, and repair deficiencies; engage in heavy manual labour as needed.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent.
  • Minimum two years relevant experience operating and maintaining road maintenance equipment.
  • General knowledge of road maintenance and construction methods.
  • Knowledge of minimum maintenance standards and ability to operate heavy equipment.
  • Valid Class “A” or “D” driver’s licence with airbrake “Z” endorsement.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and ability to engage courteously with the public and construction mechanics.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
  • Computer literacy with MS Office 365, Outlook, Excel, and Word.

Working Conditions

  • Ability and willingness to work outside regular business hours as required.
  • Physical ability to climb stairs and ladders, kneel, bend, walk, lift, and carry varying weights.
  • Capability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
  • Response to emergency situations during evenings and weekends, even when not on call.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for positive stakeholder engagement.
  • Ability to manage work efficiently and maintain confidentiality.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in Canada.
