Position Details

Job Summary

Provides a variety of maintenance and construction services in keeping with the ongoing operation of the municipal infrastructure, e.g. roads, bridges, culverts, buildings, waste transfer stations, water and wastewater distribution systems.

Duties and Key Responsibilities

• Operates a variety of municipal owned or rented road construction and maintenance equipment including tandem and single axle dump trucks, backhoes, grader and trackless sidewalk machines for snow removal and sanding township roads during winter season.
• Hauls gravel, fencing materials, guardrails and other road construction materials as required.
• Operates smaller equipment such as weed trimmers, brush cutters, chain saws, ladders and other hand tools for outdoor and building maintenance activities.
• Performs maintenance related to Township’s roads including repair and installation of signage, removal of trees on right of way and adjacent properties.
• Performs tasks associated with water and wastewater distribution systems, including small scale ditching and reshaping of ditches to improve water flow.
• Maintains all assigned equipment in a clean and safe operational mode and keeps records completing minor administrative tasks.
• Conducts all work in accordance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Township H&S policies to ensure safety.
• Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

No supervisory responsibilities; however may oversee activities of another employee for short periods (less than 4 hours).

Job Specifications

• Minimum Grade 12 high school diploma or equivalency acceptable to the Township.
• Ability to work safely independently and complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
• Ability to perform consistently in a construction project environment and work effectively in small groups.
• Valid Ontario drivers’ license, DZ license and a clean driver’s abstract required.
• Good communication skills with supervisors and fellow employees.
• Provincial Certification as Class 1 Water Distribution and Class 1 Wastewater Collection is an asset.
• Experience operating graders is a strong asset.

Working Conditions

• Exposure to road and traffic hazards and extreme weather conditions.
• Work involves peak periods, shifting priorities, deadlines, and may require extra hours to meet deadlines, attend meetings and respond to emergency public works situations.
• On call for varied hours for roadside assistance, winter snow removal, and water/wastewater system maintenance and repairs.
• Physically demanding outdoor construction activities.
