Join the Essex-Windsor Solid Waste Authority (EWSWA) as an Environmental Technician, where you will support a variety of environmental, infrastructure, surveying, and landfill operations.

Reporting to the Supervisor of Waste Disposal, the Environmental Technician provides technical support to management, contractors, and consultants while contributing to environmental monitoring programs, infrastructure projects, surveying, data collection, and field inspections. This position plays an important role in supporting compliance with applicable approvals, Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) guidelines, and EWSWA policies and procedures.

The mission of the EWSWA is to provide programs to manage the solid, non-hazardous waste generated in the County and the City in an environmentally sound manner through processes which include, but are not necessarily limited to, reduction, reuse, recycling, composting, and landfilling.

What You’ll Do

• Technical Support and Infrastructure Projects
  • Assist management with the design and implementation of operational processes, including compost turning processes and sampling protocols for compost, dust, water, and other environmental programs.
  • Provide technical input on project specifications, technical drawings, and operational activities related to infrastructure projects such as internal stone road construction, landfill methane gas collection systems, and new landfill cell construction.
  • Prepare preliminary cost estimates for infrastructure, maintenance, and operational projects as directed by management.
  • Inspect ongoing and intermittent monitoring activities and construction projects as directed.
  • Provide technical support for operational activities including quality assurance, line and grade control, waste compaction, surveying, and site maintenance.
  • Operate the Leachate Land Application Systems in accordance with EWSWA policies and procedures and applicable approvals.
  • Inspect and maintain landfill methane gas collection lines.
• Environmental Monitoring Data Collection and Reporting
  • Maintain, update, and compile detailed files and records for monitoring programs, including waste compaction, leachate levels, compost windrows, dustfall, and other environmental activities.
  • Maintain documentation related to construction and infrastructure projects, including new landfill cell construction.
  • Provide recommendations to management regarding preventative maintenance and repairs related to leachate collection and land application systems, composting, and methane gas collection systems.
  • Compile technical and environmental data and prepare background information for management reports and research projects.
  • Conduct field inspections and monitoring activities as directed by management.
  • Support environmental programs and activities to help ensure compliance with applicable approvals, MECP guidelines, and EWSWA policies and procedures.
• Surveying, CAD and GIS
  • Undertake detailed topographic surveys, site layouts, and technical drawings using Total Station or related surveying equipment.
  • Use CAD and GIS software to support surveying, mapping, waste compaction, site layouts, and technical documentation.
  • Collect and maintain accurate field measurements and technical information.
  • Provide surveying and technical support for construction, operational, and infrastructure projects.
• Contractor, Consultant and Resource Coordination
  • Liaise with and provide assistance to EWSWA staff, consultants, and contractors as directed by management.
  • Provide technical information and support related to environmental, construction, monitoring, and operational projects.
  • Source, order, and purchase materials, products, and other supplies as directed by management.
  • Assist management with coordinating information and resources required to support projects and operational activities.
• Performs other related duties and tasks as assigned.

What You Bring

• Education and Commitment to Growth:
  • Three (3) year Community College diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience and Expertise:
  • Six (6) months to one (1) year of related environmental, engineering, surveying, or technical experience.
  • Experience with environmental monitoring, technical data collection, and field inspections is considered an asset.
  • Experience supporting construction or infrastructure projects is considered an asset.
• Skills and Abilities:
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Word.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, GIS software, and Total Station surveying equipment.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and recordkeeping skills.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, plans, and project information.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with staff, contractors, consultants, and other stakeholders.
  • Good physical condition with the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and assignments while maintaining a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
