Licensed Electrician Wanted

The City of Elliot Lake is seeking a licensed electrician to perform scheduled preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on electrical and process control systems across municipal facilities. This position plays a critical role in maintaining safe, reliable, and efficient operations within the Plants Department and other City departments, while ensuring all work aligns with the Ontario Electrical Safety Code and supports the overall continuity of municipal infrastructure.

What You Will Be Doing

• Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electrical, instrumentation, and hydraulic systems across facilities
• Install new equipment and upgrade electrical services, power circuits, and control circuits as needed
• Perform preventive maintenance on motor control panels, soft starters, and other critical equipment
• Test, calibrate, and maintain instrumentation and electrical devices, including PLCs and control systems
• Draw or update electrical diagrams and documentation for all changes made
• Coordinate Hydro inspections, parts ordering, and record-keeping for all maintenance activities
• Support plant operations and respond to after-hours emergencies when required

What You Bring to the Table

• Licensed Maintenance/Construction or Industrial Electrician in Ontario with 5+ years’ experience in electrical and instrumentation work
• Strong troubleshooting skills for electrical, hydraulic, and instrumentation systems, including PLCs and telemetry alarms
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, manuals, and preventive maintenance schedules
• Proficiency with electrical testing, calibration, and repair tools (multimeter, amp probe, megger meter, etc.)
• Knowledge of water/wastewater plant operations, power distribution, and substation procedures
• Commitment to safety, including OHSA compliance, Ontario Electrical Safety Code, and emergency response readiness
• Excellent organizational skills for logs, reports, and parts/procurement management

Primary Purpose of Job

Performs scheduled preventive electrical maintenance on plants equipment. Repairs electrical problems both within Plants Department and other departments of the City, as coordinated by the Working Foreman Plants – Maintenance & Infrastructure and/or Manager of Environmental Services. Maintains and/or upgrades current and new technology in process control systems to Ontario Code.

Basic Job Duties

• Troubleshoot electrical and basic instrumentation problems.
• Repair or replace equipment that has failed in service, e.g. magnetic starters, contacts, coils, relays, transformers, solenoids, motors, printed circuit boards, power supplies, soft starters, etc.
• Basic adjustment and maintenance of instrumentation equipment such as pressure transmitters, level transmitters, isolators, rotork valves, chemical pump controllers, sonic level controllers, chart recorders, etc.
• Troubleshoot telemetry alarm and control system.
• Installation of any new instrumentation equipment that may be required for process control.
• Upgrading of electrical services, power circuits, and control circuits.
• Draw electrical diagrams when changes are made or diagrams are not available.
• Troubleshoot hydraulic system for valve control.
• Preventive maintenance on motor control panels and other electrical distribution panels.
• Test, calibrate and repair electrical equipment and circuits using instruments like multimeter, distance simulator, amp probe, megger meter, etc.
• Basic knowledge of PLC’s.
• Maintain daily log, CSS log, time sheets and preventive maintenance reports.
• Place orders for restocking and ordering of repair and replacement parts in accordance with procurement and departmental policies.
• Understand basic operation of the Water Plant, Sewage Plant, the distribution system and collection system.
• Back-up diesel generators – troubleshoot automatic transfer switching and electronic sensing devices at multiple locations.
• Knowledge of communication system between Water Treatment Plant and Lift Stations.
• General knowledge of electrical sub-stations and procedures of isolating Water Plant from source power. Responsible for scheduling regular substation inspections.
• Troubleshoot electrics of methane/natural gas boiler systems and explosion proof wiring systems.
• Knowledge of reduced voltage motor starting systems – installation and maintenance of soft starters, auto transformers, etc.
• General knowledge of air exchange systems at Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants.
• Arrange Hydro inspections of work performed.
• Other related duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications

• Minimum High School Diploma.
• Must be licenced in the Province of Ontario as a Maintenance / Construction Electrician or as an Industrial Electrician.
• Minimum of five (5) years experience repairing and/or maintaining electrical and instrumentation equipment and systems.
