Employment Opportunity

The Corporation of the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand is seeking to fill a permanent part-time Crossing Guard position based in the Grafton area. The Crossing Guard will assist pedestrians travelling to and from school when crossing, ensuring their safety during school hours throughout the school year.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Report to assigned crossing at appointed times and maintain a professional demeanor with the public and school children.
• Observe safe gaps in traffic and assist students and pedestrians with safe crossings of roadways.
• Work in compliance with applicable Provincial and Municipal legislation including the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Highway Traffic Act.
• Communicate with students and pedestrians, control the flow of motor vehicles, and clearly display a school crossing stop sign until all persons have cleared the roadway safely.
• Wear mandatory safety equipment at all times while on duty as supplied by the Township.
• Inspect crossing intersection daily, report and document all concerns and/or incidents.

Qualifications & Skills

• Must be dependable and available for call-in on short notice.
• Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time.
• Good judgment and ability to work independently and unsupervised.
• Excellent customer service and strong communication skills.
• Positive, courteous, and professional interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Ability to hold up a school crossing stop sign above shoulder height for extended periods.
• Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Highway Traffic Act.
• Obtain and maintain a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check.

Hours of Work

This position works during the school year with hours from 8:15 AM to 9:15 AM and 3:15 PM to 4:15 PM (2 hours per day, approximately 10 hours per week). Hours may vary based on school operations. The position is available immediately.

Compensation

The pay rate for this position is $21.15 per hour (January 1, 2026 Wage rate CUPE 5574).
