Position Purpose

Under the direction of the Manager, Programs & Community Engagement, the Coordinator of Children’s and Youth Services is responsible for planning, coordination, developing, and implementing a comprehensive program of children’s and youth services, including programs, reference, and reader advisory services. The Coordinator of Children’s and Youth Services has a positive attitude and the ability to work in a complex, changing environment. This position works within the team to ensure the Library's strategic goals are met.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Master’s in Library and Information Studies (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited university; or a combination of education and experience; current vulnerable sector screening.
  • A minimum of two (2) years experience at a senior level in a public library, working and planning programs of literacy-based activities for children.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Knowledge of the practices, procedures, and techniques of library science including such areas as general knowledge of and ability to use reference tools, classification, cataloguing, acquisition, circulation, children’s and youth books and materials, thorough knowledge of children’s interests and reading levels and of books and authors.
  • Thorough knowledge of procedures and skills applicable to children’s library service such as storytelling.
  • Thorough knowledge of the development, needs, and abilities of children and youth.
  • Ability to analyze professional and administrative problems and suggest practical solutions.
  • Ability to express oneself effectively and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and direct a complete program of library activities for children and youth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, community groups, and the general public.
  • Presides over the immediate, effective, and efficient operations of the Library when scheduled as Person-in-Charge (PIC).
  • Demonstrated commitment to learn and develop professionally.
  • Class G Driver’s License in good standing and reliable vehicle to use on library business when required.
  • This position is required to take every reasonable precaution in the circumstances for the protection of the health and safety of the worker.
