Major Responsibilities
- Develop, organize, implement, and facilitate educational, recreational, and social activities for residents of all ages (including school-aged children, youth, and adults).
- Incorporates a variety of facility-based programming alongside occasional water games and swim days at local pools or splash pads for families.
- Create and maintain a warm, welcoming, and inclusive environment for residents and families.
- Ensure all activities are age-appropriate, culturally inclusive, and are responsive to the diverse needs of residents (e.g., in-house and external tournaments, educational workshops, and holiday events).
- Arrange, promote and supervise events on-site and off-site (community center workshops, park outings, and aquatic facilities) including coordinating transportation, equipment, promotional materials, facility bookings, group rates and nutritional requirements.
- Complete monthly calendars, program plans, evaluations, participation records, critical incident reports, and other required documentation for management review.
- Assist in facilitating resident and children’s meetings that support participation in service delivery, program planning, development, evaluation, and policy feedback.
- Prepare agendas, take minutes, and follow up on action items and recommendations from meetings.
- Attend group outings with residents (children, youth, and adults), in collaboration with client programming staff leading the activity.
- Monitor programs and activities across diverse indoor and outdoor settings, ensuring established standards, general safety protocols, and specific water safety rules during pool or splash pad activities are upheld by staff and residents.
- Provide feedback on programs and submit recommendations for program changes to Supervisor of Social Assistance or Program Supervisor.
- Work with Management to transition new hires and volunteers into their position.
- Recommend the purchase of recreational supplies and equipment while maintaining storage systems and monitoring inventory levels.
- Report repairs and replacement needs of equipment and supplies.
- Maintain a welcoming environment in all program areas.
- Respond to parental or caregiver inquiries regarding children’s participation, behavior, and wellbeing, while actively promoting parental involvement.
- Undertake special projects and assignments as required.
- Partner and liaise with community agencies to develop and implement enhanced literacy and life-skills programming for children, youth, and adults.
- Ensure all materials and equipment are gathered, organized, and ready ahead of each activity—from standard arts, crafts, and sports gear to specialized items for seasonal pool or splash pad outings—to support smooth execution of the program.
- Support resident engagement and inclusion in accordance with Toronto Shelter Standards and Housing First principles.
- Promote positive parent-child engagement and model supportive interactions.
Key Qualifications
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:
- Experience in the development, implementation, and evaluation of recreational and social programs within a social service setting, with proven ability to serve clients of all ages (0 to 99) with a focus on adults, youth, and school-aged children.
- Experience supporting individuals and families experiencing homelessness or housing instability.
- Experience assisting individuals with diverse psychosocial, physical, educational, emotional, and environmental needs within a shelter or similar residential setting.
You must also have:
- Ability to work collaboratively with Operations, Case Management, Senior Management Teams, and community agencies to develop and implement programming for children, youth, and adults.
- Ability to establish and maintain professional and effective working relationships with residents (adults, children, and youth), families, staff, and community partners.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Fundamental knowledge of domestic violence, substance use, mental health, and the Child, Youth, and Family Services Act (CYFSA).
- Knowledge of behaviour management techniques for adults, children, and youth.
- Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills, with demonstrated ability to manage and resolve complex situations.
- Ability to work flexible hours (i.e. days, afternoons, evenings and weekends).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).
- Experience with conflict de-escalation and crisis response in a residential or community environment.
Work Location
Shifts are assigned based on portfolio and may take place across multiple sites within that portfolio. Portfolio assignments are determined by operations.
